I ordered one that was officially recommended for the PowerBook (it was actually a PC2700 even though only a PC2100 was needed) and it did not register the first time I put it in either. I removed and reinserted very carefully and it finally worked. Seems it is a bit picky about insertion alignment.

As simple as this was to do it was extremely helpful. You'd think the Jolicloud devs would post this type of info somewhere easy to find. Id be happy to see any more Jolicloud/linux tips you have for a newb like me.

I liked your article. I recently picked up the 867 MHz "little Al" on Ebay for just over $200. I think it's a great machine. Mine only is running Tiger, but adding an Airport Xtreme card and some more RAM makes it a viable machine today. They get a little warm on the bottom, but not so much as to worry.

Long live Apple!

I've got an old eMac in my basement that I keep around for the same reasons. Great old-skool keyboard, and with a gig of RAM it runs Leopard just fine, I must say.

That said, I absolutely adore my black Macbook, and while it's far from being obsoleted, I suspect I will be able to continue to use it for web browsing, basic word processing, and all my usual online nonsense for a good long time to come. Certainly well past the day I invest in one of those new iMacs they recently rolled out...

Xubuntu is a lower footprint version, it doesn't have the larger full-sized desktop software that regular Ubuntu has. So it runs better on a slower and smaller memory model. But you can add anything that you feel is missing with the software configuration tools.

Since the 620 only had 1 GIG of RAM and only a 1.6 GHZ CPU, and I already had Xubuntu downloaded onto a CD for installation on other machines, I used it. I bet regular Ubuntu would run fine.

Hi, I found your site while looking for peoples experiences with Ubuntu on emachines laptops. I just bought a D620 today with Vista on it. I need it to update the computer in my airplane. I am running Ubuntu on two other machines, but have no experience with laptops.

Why did you chose Xubuntu and not Ubuntu? Have you tried to upgrade Ubuntu since installing it?

Hi Keith,
Good thoughts you've got here... Browser wars seem to go on forever, and I (like about 50 million others) wish that one of them would come out on top, with all the best features that the others have, AND be adaptable to all the various sites that one visits in the course of a work day... Am I hopelessly dreaming?
